Field Trips
Studio: Visual Asylum
This was by far my favorite studio interior and layout. The bright colors, previous work on display, and overall aesthetic definitely made me feel at home. I truly enjoyed seeing work from a design firm that has been a staple in San Diego for so long. It gave me insight into the world of graphic design and what it really looks like to be a designer in the real world. I greatly appreciated all the background information and time spent going over a multitude of design projects- it excites me for what is to come!
Ram Castillo: How to get a job in Graphic Design, Guaranteed
I really enjoyed hearing Ram speak (maybe it was the Australian accent, as it reminded me of a trip I took there many many years ago), but his thoughts resonated with me. Some things were common sense and other topics he touched on were good reminders, like networking. That has always been my soft spot, as I look for human connection rather than a work connection. Yet, he made it seem easier to chat with people and still make a connection both deeply and in a business sense. It was inspiring to hear from someone from another country that is currently in the midst of graphic design. I'm interested to read his book and see if I can apply anything to my work/school life now.
Studio: Studio Conover
Wow. I've never seen a graphic design firm like this before! It was inspiring to hear that design can even reach into the outdoor realm and create a new body of work. It really was the definition of niche- everyone has one and you have to find it. Though I would have liked to have seen more of Conover's design work, I did enjoy seeing their space and hearing from someone who has been in the industry for years.
Though at times intimidating, it was great to see real world examples of graphic design in the community. It's given me new goals, more inspiration, and even loftier aspirations for myself in this new chosen profession. I look forward to seeing more studios and understanding more about this form that bridges the gap between business and art.
